In order to better understand the energy efficiency improvement potential of residential energy use, we need detailed data on the energy consumption and performance of the installed base of residential appliances and equipment, including free-standing cookers. Free-standing cookers are used globally, but the technologies and performance of the units used vary widely. In addition to performance data, information on the installed stock of free-standing cookers is necessary.

Cooking is a technology that has been used by humans for many years. In order to facilitate this process in homes and in small businesses, people have developed devices such as cookers, which have evolved over time, been improved, and have been commercialized at an industrial level today. In these technological developments, different features have been added to the stoves and ovens, such as electricity to replace firewood in rural areas and reduce greenhouse gas effects or liquefied petroleum gas to improve commercial cooking times. Despite these development efforts, today’s devices increase energy use; additionally, this energy use is not efficient and continues to generate important payments for families or small businesses.

A cooker is one of the most important devices in any household. Cooking methods have evolved from primitive methods such as solar cooking, open fires, and the use of ceramic cookware to modern kitchen devices. Over time, advanced technology has helped make cooking an almost automatic process. Modern free-standing cookers have evolved to become the ultimate kitchen appliance to use for all developments in cooking methods. This innovation is made possible thanks to the use of affordable but advanced printed circuit board technologies, sensors, and heating coil technologies. With the help of modern electronic hardware developments, it is now possible to have advanced cooking functions thanks to newly available control systems such as microcomputers, memory chips, and large liquid crystal displays.

A free-standing cooker is an all-in-one kitchen appliance that can handle most household cooking needs in a single unit. These usually include a multi-burner surface unit, a microwave oven, and a convection oven, with the most advanced models also integrating a digital control panel and electronic circuitry. Another popular alternative for higher-end models is to connect the unit to an external or built-in appliance hub that comes with a more advanced control panel. Since the unit is proportionally larger compared to other smaller kitchen appliances, it usually comes with a larger array of functions and more powerful microcomputer controls. The purpose of this project is to describe all the workflows that are needed to develop a scalable electronics architecture that is used to control such a unit. This scalable electronics architecture will then be mounted inside one of these devices.

 
The use of mechanical devices for cooking, in a similar manner to the formation of machines, has a history in common with humanity. Cooking food for which primitive people hunted and plants that were collected serves to reduce the hardness of these foods, as well as to increase the amount of nutrient metabolism by reducing the time spent chewing and digesting these foods. However, the function of cooking was not limited to these features. The application of heat has been found to be the process for the growth of a great many microorganisms that may be present on natural foods. Accidentally or fortuitously, some sensations have directed primitive people about the techniques used to hunt. Some do not agree with the strict observation; in the beginning, our ancestors started cooking by observing the heat released by lightning fires. Then, they learned to keep this fire always lit and discovered the use of stones and other natural elements to store and emit heat, but it did not take long for these primitive surfaces to be replaced by others carved in tamped soil. The use of an especially dedicated tool designed to stoke and accumulate heat later in the form of a well-prepared oven, similar to ours, allowed us to shape our evolutionary process properly.
